Three extortionists sent to fourteen days jail custody in Teliamura

Cracking down quietly on extortion in the name of ‘Durga Puja’ by unruly youths , the police in Teliamura nabbed three youths and got them consigned to fourteen days jail custody for extorting money from a truck driver and assaulting police personnel on duty. The police is now preparing a charge-sheet against the trio on serious charges.

Giving details police sources from Teliamura said that on October 1 Sanjib Chakma , a truck driver from remote Manikpur area under Dhalai district, had filed a complaint with the Teliamura police station against extortion of Rs 4 thousand by three youths in the name of collecting ‘Puja’ subscription in front of Barmura cafeteria in Shanti Nagar area under Teliamura on the national highway. Responding promptly to the complaint a team of police, TSR and CAPF led by sub-inspector Sumitra Debbarma reached the Shanti Nagar area along with the driver who identified the three extortionists.

Sources said that when the police force attempted to catch hold of the three guilty youths they turned ballistic and rammed a motor bike bearing number TRO6A-6476 into the leg of female constable Sampa Dasgupta. She fell on the ground with injuries and had to be subsequently treated in the Teliamura hospital. However the police team nabbed the three miscreants identified as Dhruba Saha, Sudip Chakraborty and Uttam Deb and brought them to Teliamura police station though a few others had fled the spot. A case of extortion and assault was registered against them and the trio were produced in court yesterday . They were sent to fourteen days of judicial custody . The sub-inspector Sumitra Debbarma warned that even though no individual or group was being specifically targeted the police will continue to take against extortion and disturbance caused to people in case any complaint is received.
