Re-polling is being held today, Saturday, in three seats of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Village Committee elections, following incidents and allegations of irregularities during the earlier polling process. Elaborate preparations have been completed for the re-poll, while the political situation surrounding one of the seats has taken an additional turn after a BJP candidate reportedly joined Tipra Motha ahead of the fresh voting.
According to the information received from the state election commission, the re-poll is being conducted in three Village Committee seats. These include Seats No. 3 and 4 of the Gamaria Village Committee under Matabari RD Block and Seat No. 4 of the Paharpur Village Committee under Amarpur RD Block.
Election preparations for the three seats have reportedly already been completed. Voters are started to exercise their franchise at the designated polling stations since today morning at 7 am and it will continue 4 pm, according to the schedule.
Meanwhile, it is alleged that before Re-Poll, the most politically significant development has occurred in Seat No. 3 of Ward No. 2 of Gamaria Village Committee under Matabari block. The BJP candidate from the seat, Dayabati Reang, reportedly joined Tipra Motha on Thursday evening, even though the Election Commission had already announced the re-poll following the earlier voting-related incident.
The re-poll is scheduled for today, Saturday. The development has generated considerable political discussion because the candidate's name reportedly remains on the ballot paper as the BJP nominee despite her subsequent political association with Tipra Motha.
The incident has also triggered debate among political observers about the organisational position of the BJP in the tribal areas and the implications of such a political shift for the BJP–Tipra Motha alliance.
