The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tripura will commence in its revised schedule from October 27, with the Election Commission of India undertaking the exercise to ensure that the voter list remains accurate, updated and free from eligible voters being inadvertently excluded.

The matter was highlighted at a recent interaction with the media organised at the office of West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, IAS where officials explained the procedures to be followed during the SIR exercise and clarified how citizens can protect their electoral rights.

According to the revised schedule approved by the Election Commission of India, the preparatory, training and printing phase will continue from October 27 to November 5, 2026. The crucial house-to-house verification by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will then take place from November 6 to December 5.

The revision schedule was changed in view of the Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council, which were held on September 28. The state election machinery had requested postponement of the SIR exercise to prevent the two major electoral processes from overlapping. The Election Commission subsequently approved the revised timetable.

Officials said the principal objective of the SIR is to ensure that the electoral roll contains the names of all eligible citizens while preventing ineligible or duplicate entries from remaining on the list.

During the house-to-house exercise, BLOs will visit voters' residences and undertake the necessary verification and collection of information. The exercise is also intended to identify discrepancies in existing electoral records and facilitate corrections wherever required.

Citizens have therefore been advised to cooperate with BLOs and provide the necessary information and documents in accordance with the Election Commission's prescribed procedure.

Officials also explained an important aspect of the SIR process that the name of an eligible voter cannot simply be deleted from the electoral roll without following the prescribed procedure.

Similarly, if an ineligible person's name is found in the roll, the matter has to be dealt with under the Election Commission's rules and procedures. Citizens will have opportunities to raise claims and objections after publication of the draft electoral roll.

The clarification is significant because the SIR process involves verification of individual entries and may result in corrections, additions or deletions where legally justified.

The draft electoral roll will be published on December 12, 2026. Following its publication, citizens and other stakeholders will be able to submit claims and objections.

The claims and objections period will remain open from December 12, 2026, to January 10, 2027. The subsequent notice and disposal process will continue until February 9, 2027.

The Election Commission has fixed January 1, 2027, as the qualifying date for the revised electoral roll. The final electoral roll is scheduled to be published on February 15, 2027.

As part of the exercise, the rationalisation and rearrangement of polling stations will also be undertaken, with the process scheduled to be completed by December 5.

The authorities have stressed that the SIR is not merely a name-verification exercise but a comprehensive revision of the electoral database aimed at improving the accuracy of voter records.

DM of West Tripura district urged voters to remain attentive during the verification process and ensure that their names, addresses and other electoral particulars are correctly reflected in the records.

If a citizen finds that their name has been omitted or that any information is incorrect after publication of the draft roll, the prescribed claims and objections mechanism can be used to seek inclusion or correction.

The authorities have also indicated that special assistance will be available for voters who may require support, including elderly citizens and persons who need assistance in completing the prescribed procedures.

The revised SIR exercise is expected to cover the electoral rolls across Tripura's Assembly constituencies and will culminate in the publication of the final electoral roll on February 15, 2027.
