Students of Tripura University’s political science department on Thursday staged a protest on the university campus against a guest faculty member, alleging harassment of female students and seeking an inquiry into the matter.
The protest was primarily led by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), with students from the Integrated Masters Degree (IMD) and master’s degree courses also participating.
The protesting students alleged that the guest faculty, Dr Sumon Ali, had harassed multiple female students, made indecent proposals and sought inappropriate favours. They further claimed that several female students had allegedly faced similar conduct from the teacher in the past.
Dr Ali, however, denied all the allegations and said he was willing to cooperate with any investigation ordered by the university.
“This is a concerted effort to defame me and harm my reputation adversely. I vehemently reject the allegations raised against me,” he said.
Dr Ali said the university authorities had summoned him following the protest and that he had urged them to conduct a proper inquiry into the allegations.
“I have informed the concerned authorities to conduct a proper investigation to find out the truth. Based on the findings of the investigation, I shall decide what action should be taken,” he said.
The allegations and counterclaims could not be independently verified.
