David Murasing Raises Objection to New Tripura Sports Council, Demands Tribal Representation; Warns of Movement

Senior Tipra Motha leader and TTAADC MDC David Murasing has strongly objected to the recently reconstituted Tripura Sports Council, alleging that the new body does not include adequate representation from the state’s tribal community or any prominent tribal sports talent.
Murasing raised the issue through a Facebook Live, questioning the composition of the council and urging the Tripura Government to reconsider the notification and constitute a fresh committee with representation from indigenous communities.
The Tripura Government’s Youth Affairs & Sports Department issued the notification on September 25, 2026, stating that the Governor had reconstituted the Tripura Sports Council in accordance with the Memorandum of Association and the amended Bye-Laws dated April 24, 2017. The council has been constituted for a three-year term from the date of issuance of the notification.
According to the notification, the Minister of Education (YAS Department) Tinku Ray has been designated Chairman, while the Secretary and Director of the Youth Affairs & Sports Department have been made Vice-Chairmen. Goutam Sarkar has been appointed Secretary, Tapan Bhattacharjee Joint Secretary and Swapan Saha Treasurer. The council also includes Sanjay Paul, Ratan Saha, Dr. Rajib Debnath, Sanjay Saha, Shyamalika Roy, Santosh Das, Biswajit Paul, Bijoy Saha, Mantosh Sinha, Manish Purkayastha, Rupasree Das, Samir Das, Ajoy Datta and Manoj Kumar Biswas as members.
The notification, however, does not identify the members by community or sporting discipline. Murasing, while commenting on the composition, alleged that no tribal sports personality or representative has been included in the newly constituted council.
In his Facebook Live, Murasing criticised what he described as discrimination on the basis of caste, religion and language in the constitution of the Sports Council. He appealed to the authorities to change the present committee and form a new one ensuring appropriate representation.
His statement broadly means that he has requested the authorities to reconsider and replace the committee if it has been constituted by making distinctions based on caste, religion or language, and that otherwise he would be compelled to launch a movement.
Murasing’s intervention comes at a time when the state government has been highlighting the development of sports infrastructure and promotion of sporting talent. Earlier in September, Chief Minister Manik Saha said the government was focusing on strengthening cricket infrastructure, including a proposed modern cricket academy at Sekerkote and development of other sporting facilities.
