Rs.5 Lakh Demanded, Businessman Beaten and Robbed After Refusal, Gunshot Allegedly Fired at Kashipur near Agartala

A businessman was allegedly assaulted and robbed after a group of men demanded Rs.5 lakh from him and attacked him when he refused to pay, in a serious incident reported in Agartala ahead of the Durga Puja festivities.
The injured businessman has been identified as Anup Kumar Singh, a resident of Reshambagan in Agartala. Following the incident, he was rescued and admitted to GB Pant Hospital for treatment. His family said he suffered serious pain and injuries to his face and hands.
According to the complaint, the incident took place while Anup Kumar Singh was returning home after finishing his work at his shop. A group of persons allegedly intercepted him on the road and demanded Rs.5 lakh.
When Anup reportedly told them that he could not arrange such a large amount, the accused allegedly assaulted him. The complaint further alleges that one of the attackers fired a round from a pistol targeting him. However, the bullet reportedly missed him and passed over his head.
The assault allegedly continued even after the firing. According to the complaint, when Anup fell to the ground, the attackers allegedly beat him again and removed a gold chain weighing around two-and-a-half bhori from his neck. They also allegedly took approximately Rs.51,000 in cash that he was carrying.
Anup was subsequently rescued and taken to GB Pant Hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. His family has claimed that he suffered injuries and severe pain, particularly to his face and hands.
Following the incident, a written complaint was lodged at Bodhjungnagar Police Station by members of Anup's family. The complaint reportedly names Butan Ghosh and Birendra Majumdar among those accused.
Police have reportedly started an investigation into the allegations. Although the names of several persons have been mentioned in the complaint, police have not yet arrested all those named, according to the report.
The incident has raised fresh concerns among sections of the business community in Agartala, particularly ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations.
