Resident doctors at GB Hospital on Wednesday began a sit-in protest outside the Principal’s office, demanding immediate measures to strengthen security and workplace protection for doctors and healthcare staff.

The protest was organised by the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) following an incident involving a senior resident doctor at the Medicine OPD. The association said the incident had raised concerns over the safety and professional dignity of medical practitioners.

Resident doctors gathered outside the Principal’s office early morning with placards and submitted a five-point memorandum to the college administration, seeking action on their demands.

The RDA has sought the removal of videos related to the incident that are circulating on social media and demanded that corrections be issued for what it described as misinformation, along with a public apology. It also called for measures to prevent the circulation of similar content in the future.

The association has opposed what it described as a unilateral media trial, saying no judgment or decision should be taken without hearing the doctor’s version of events.

It has also sought restrictions on unauthorised photography and videography inside hospital wards, OPDs and patient service areas. The association said media personnel, patients and attendants should not be permitted to record such areas without authorisation, citing concerns over privacy and safety.

Another demand is for the Medical Superintendent to lodge an FIR against individuals whom the association alleges made false accusations against the doctor. It has sought strict legal action in such cases.

The RDA has also demanded changes in the hospital’s security arrangements, including replacement of SIS security guards with TSR personnel and stronger security measures for doctors and other healthcare workers.

The association said the protest was linked not only to the particular incident but also to broader concerns over the safety and dignity of medical professionals in the state. It maintained that doctors require a secure workplace to perform their duties and provide patient care.

Speaking to reporters, an agitating doctor said the protest would continue until concrete steps were taken. The doctor said the administration should act swiftly to ensure a safe and respectful workplace for doctors and healthcare workers.

There was no immediate response from the hospital administration to the RDA’s demands.
