BJP Tripura state president Abhishek Debroy became emotional during his visit to GB Pant Hospital on Tuesday morning to meet Khachindra Reang, the Tipra Motha Village Committee candidate who was allegedly shot at Warengbari during the TTAADC Village Committee elections.
Debroy reportedly became tearful while seeing the injured candidate at the hospital. Speaking about the incident, he said that he had been deeply disturbed since learning that the young candidate had been shot and that he could not sleep properly the previous night.
According to Debroy, there may be individuals with criminal tendencies within different political organisations, but the actions of such individuals should not be allowed to bring disrepute to an entire political party or the government.
He called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the Warengbari shooting and demanded that anyone found responsible should face the strictest punishment under the law. He emphasised that the identities and political affiliations of the accused should not prevent the authorities from taking legal action if their involvement is established through investigation.
Debroy's visit comes amid continuing tension in parts of Gomati district following the shooting of the Tipra Motha candidate and subsequent clashes and protests.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury visited Gomati District Hospital on Tuesday morning to meet injured Tipra Motha supporters and enquire about their condition.
Chaudhury alleged that members of what he described as the BJP's armed groups were involved in the attack on the Tipra Motha candidate. The allegation has not been established by the police, and the identities and involvement of the alleged attackers remain subject to investigation.
According to Chaudhury, during the confrontation, Tipra Motha supporters allegedly obtained the registration numbers of two expensive vehicles that they suspect were connected with the incident. He urged the police to verify the vehicle-related information through a proper investigation and identify those responsible for the shooting.
The CPI(M) leader also demanded that the police arrest the alleged perpetrators and ensure that those found guilty receive stringent punishment in accordance with law.
The Warengbari incident occurred during polling for the TTAADC Village Committee elections. While polling was reported to have remained peaceful in most areas, the shooting of the Tipra Motha candidate became a major exception and subsequently contributed to tension in parts of Gomati district. Reports from the election day said the Tipra Motha candidate was shot by some BJP miscreants, while two other people were also injured.
The incident has since triggered protests and road blockades, including at Maharani on the Udaipur–Amarpur road, where Tipra Motha supporters have demanded immediate arrests. Tipra Motha MDC CK Jamatia has also warned of renewed National Highway blockades in Gomati district if the alleged perpetrators are not arrested.
The competing political claims have added to the tension surrounding the election-related violence. While Opposition leaders have alleged political involvement, the investigation will have to establish the identity of the attackers, the circumstances of the shooting and whether any political organisation or individual was involved.
With protests continuing and demands for arrests growing, the police and administration now face pressure to conduct a transparent investigation, examine available evidence including vehicle details and witness accounts, and take legal action against anyone found responsible.
