Tipra Motha Supporters Resume Road Blockade at Maharani, Demand Arrest of Warengbari Shooting Accused

Tension resurfaced in Gomati district on Tuesday as supporters of Tipra Motha again blocked the Udaipur–Amarpur road at Maharani, demanding the immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in the shooting of Tipra Motha Village Committee candidate Khachindra Reang at Warengbari during the TTAADC Village Committee elections.
The fresh road blockade began at around 11 am on Tuesday, with protesters demanding action against the alleged accused in the shooting incident. The protesters said they would not withdraw the agitation until the police take concrete steps to arrest those allegedly responsible for the attack.
The development comes hours after Tipra Motha MDC CK Jamatia warned that his party supporters could again block National Highways in Gomati district if the persons allegedly involved in the Warengbari shooting were not arrested by Tuesday.
The earlier blockade at Maharani had been withdrawn late Monday night following negotiations between Tipra Motha supporters and police officials. During the discussions, Jamatia reportedly spoke with IG Law and Order Ipper Manchak, IPS, and demanded immediate police action against the alleged perpetrators.
Jamatia maintained that the police must arrest those responsible for the attack without delay and stressed that justice should not be selective. He also claimed that Tipra Motha supporters had already provided police with information and evidence concerning a vehicle allegedly used by the persons involved in the firing.
According to Jamatia, one of the vehicles allegedly connected with the incident had been identified and details were handed over to the police shortly after the shooting. He further claimed that local residents and eyewitnesses present at the scene were willing to cooperate with the investigation and provide information that could assist police in identifying and apprehending the alleged attackers.
Jamatia, however, alleged that despite the availability of such information and witnesses, the police had not taken sufficiently proactive steps to arrest the accused.
The MDC subsequently warned that failure to arrest the alleged culprits by Tuesday morning could lead to renewed road blockades across Gomati district, potentially involving a larger number of supporters. The fresh blockade at Maharani on Tuesday morning indicates that the issue remains unresolved.
The Warengbari shooting had triggered tension in the Gamaria area during and after polling for the TTAADC Village Committee elections. Khachindra Reang, a Tipra Motha candidate, was allegedly shot during the election-related violence and was subsequently referred to Agartala for treatment.
The situation subsequently escalated in and around Maharani, where clashes and confrontations were reported amid demands for police action. Gomati district SP Anirban Das was reportedly injured, while the official vehicle of Udaipur SDPO Debanjali Roy was reportedly vandalised during the unrest. One Sector Officer and OC RK Pur also attacked.
Police later intervened to clear the road and bring the situation under control.
The renewed blockade has once again raised concerns over the law-and-order situation in parts of Gomati district following the TTAADC Village Committee polling. Protesters are now pressing the police for arrests, while the administration faces the task of maintaining public order and ensuring that allegations arising from the election-related violence are investigated in accordance with law.
