Tension Escalates in Udaipur’s Maharani as SDPOs Vehicles Damaged, Police Re-open Road after Lathi-Charge

Tension escalated in and around Maharani in Udaipur subdivision on Monday following the alleged shooting of a Tipra Motha candidate during the TTAADC Village Committee election, with clashes reported near a strongroom, injuries to SP Gomati Anirban Das, damage to a police vehicle belonging to the SDPO Denanjali Ray, and subsequent police action to disperse protesters.

The situation reportedly turned volatile after supporters and protesters gathered in Maharani demanding the immediate arrest of those allegedly involved in the shooting of Tipra Motha candidate Khachindra Reang. The candidate was reportedly injured in a firing incident at Wareng Bari under the Gamaria area during the polling process.

The situation further deteriorated in Maharani when a vehicle of SDPO Debanjali Roy was reportedly vandalised amid the heightened tension. Police subsequently resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd and clear the road blockade.

The police action came after protesters had blocked the road demanding the arrest of those allegedly responsible for the firing incident involving the Tipra Motha candidate.

The developments added to an already tense atmosphere in Udaipur subdivision, where clashes and allegations of violence had been reported during the Village Committee election.

Earlier, the situation had become tense near a strongroom in the Gamaria area, where Gomati district Superintendent of Police Anirban Das was reportedly injured after being struck by bricks.

Reports also indicated that an Officer-in-Charge (OC) and a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) sustained injuries during the confrontation near the strongroom.

The injured SP was subsequently brought to Gomati District Hospital for treatment. The District Magistrate also visited the hospital to enquire about his condition.

The incident reportedly triggered a heavy deployment of security personnel around the strongroom and surrounding areas as authorities attempted to prevent further escalation.

Following the alleged shooting of the Tipra Motha candidate, supporters of Tipra Motha staged a road blockade in Maharani, demanding the arrest of those accused of carrying out the attack.

The blockade continued amid heightened tension before police intervened and used a lathi-charge to clear the road.

Authorities were subsequently deployed in strength in the area to restore normal movement and prevent further clashes.

The shooting incident has also triggered a political confrontation, with BJP's General Secretary Bipin Debbarma making serious allegations regarding the incident.

According to Debbarma, the firing incident at Gamaria was allegedly linked to a broader political plan to defame BJP and the NDA alliance. He alleged that CPI(M) was involved in the attack on the Tipra Motha candidate.

Debbarma reportedly claimed that the alleged attack was intended to create unrest and undermine the Tipra Motha candidate during the Village Committee election.
