Former Tripura High Court Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh Recommended for Elevation to Supreme Court

In a significant development for the judiciary, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, who served as the eighth Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura, has been recommended for elevation as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

According to a statement issued by the Supreme Court Collegium following its meeting on September 28, 2026, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, presently the Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana, is among three Chief Justices of High Courts recommended for elevation to the country's apex court.

The other two Chief Justices recommended are Justice Sunita Agarwal, Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court, and Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. The Collegium statement identifies Justice Singh's parent High Court as the Jharkhand High Court.

Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was born on July 7, 1965. He completed his BA Honours and LLB from the University of Delhi and enrolled as an advocate in 1990.

He began his legal practice at the Patna High Court, where he practised until 2000. From 2001, he practised before the Jharkhand High Court.

Justice Singh was appointed an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 24, 2012, and was subsequently confirmed as a permanent judge in January 2014. He later served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court from December 20, 2022, to February 19, 2023.

Justice Singh was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura following the retirement of Justice Jaswant Singh. He took oath as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura on April 17, 2023, becoming the eighth Chief Justice of the court.

During his tenure, the Tripura High Court undertook a number of judicial and administrative initiatives, including measures relating to digitisation, e-filing, judicial training and legal services.

He continued as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court until his transfer to Telangana in 2025.

Following a recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was transferred from Tripura to Telangana and appointed Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana.

He took oath as Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on July 19, 2025, and has since been serving in that position.

His elevation recommendation now marks another major step in a judicial career spanning more than three decades.
