TTAADC Village Committee Polls: 72% Turnout Reported by 4 PM Amid Isolated Incidents, Firing and Clashes

Polling for the TTAADC Village Committee General Election–2026 witnessed substantial voter participation across Tripura on Monday, with around 72% turnout reported by 4 PM, even as isolated incidents of violence, allegations of irregularities and clashes were reported from different parts of the state.
Polling began at 7 AM amid extensive security arrangements. The election covers 587 Village Committees, with voting being held for the contested seats. The State Election Commission had deployed 74 companies of CAPF along with around 8,977 personnel of Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles for election security.
One of the most serious incidents was reported from Warengbari under Maharani Outpost in Udaipur subdivision of Gomati district, where reports emerged of firing near a polling station.
According to reports reaching from the area, a Tipra Motha candidate and two party workers were allegedly injured in the firing. Another report identified one injured tribal youth as 36-year-old Khachindra Reang, who was reportedly admitted to Gomati District Hospital for treatment.A large police contingent was subsequently deployed in the area to prevent further escalation and maintain law and order.The circumstances leading to the reported firing, including who was responsible and whether the incident was directly connected with the polling process, were not immediately clear.
Tension was also reported from Kakraban-Shamukchhara, where allegations surfaced of an attack on CPI(M) candidate Nirmal Chan Murasing and polling agent Sanjit Debbarma.
Reports also suggested that there was a verbal confrontation involving supporters of three political groups in the area and that CPI(M) polling agents were allegedly attacked.
Another incident was reported from Gopalpur Village under Laljuri block of Kanchanpur subdivision, where an independent candidate's polling agent was allegedly attacked.
According to the allegation, the agent was attacked by a group of people who had reportedly come from Kanchanpur. Fire and emergency personnel were said to have reached the area after the incident, and the injured person was reportedly admitted to Laljuri Primary Health Centre.
Authorities are expected to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.Tension was also reported from Ward No. 4 of Paharpur in Amarpur, following an argument over voting. The Returning Officer reportedly reached the spot and intervened as the situation became tense.
Former TTAADC Chief Executive Member and CPI(M) leader Radhacharan Debbarma alleged that opposition candidates and polling agents faced obstruction at several polling stations and also raised allegations of bogus voting in parts of West Tripura, including Jirania and Mandai, as well as areas of Sepahijala district.
In another incident, the West Tripura District Magistrate, Dr Vishal Kumar, reportedly received a complaint from a CPIM candidate during a polling-station visit at Mandai that outsiders were allegedly being shown as voters and allowed to cast votes. According to the information available, the District Magistrate directed the police to look into the complaint and stop any such activity if found.
At the same time, the official administrative assessment has been considerably different in several districts.
The Gomati District administration stated that polling was being conducted peacefully and smoothly, with the District Election Officer-cum-District Magistrate and Collector visiting polling stations and monitoring arrangements. The administration said necessary measures were being closely monitored to ensure a free, fair and orderly election.
The Chief Minister also described the polling process as peaceful and urged voters to participate in the democratic exercise.Reports from North Tripura similarly indicated that polling was proceeding in a festive atmosphere, with voters turning up at polling stations from the morning.
The authorities had made extensive security arrangements for Monday's election, particularly because several polling stations were classified as sensitive or vulnerable. More than 15,000 central and state security personnel were reported to have been deployed for the election.
Earlier reports from the State Election Commission indicated that polling was scheduled from 7 AM to 4 PM, with counting scheduled for October 5. The reported 72% turnout by 4 PM, confirmed by the State Election Commission, indicates strong voter participation despite the isolated incidents reported from some locations.
The election is particularly significant as the Village Committee polls are being held after a prolonged 10 year's gap. The contest involves major political forces including Tipra Motha, BJP, CPI(M), Congress, IPFT and independent candidates.
