Peaceful voting in ethnically sensitive Mandai till 2-00 PM

The elections to the village committees in ethnically sensitive Mandai area under Jirania subdivision, scene of the worst Bengali massacre during the 1980 riots, has been peaceful and smooth till 2-00 in the afternoon. There are altogether 57 seats in the 27 Village Committees under the Mandai block.

The Block Development Officer (BDO) of Mandai, Nantu Deb said that no untoward incident including electoral malpractice has so far been reported from any of the polling stations spread over the Mandai block. He said that polling will continue till 4-00 in the afternoon and nothing untoward is likely to happen till then. The BDO Nantu Deb said that the elections to the Village Committees are coming off today after a gap of ten years and there is great enthusiasm among voters. Long before the polling began large number of voters clad in traditional attires had formed long queues in front of the polling booths and then polling commenced peacefully from 7-00 AM.
