Journalist Urmi Kar’s son allegedly threatened during stone-pelting incident at Dewanpasha residence, family seeks impartial investigation

Serious allegations of an attack on the residence of journalist Urmi Kar at Dewanpasha under Dharmanagar in North Tripura day before yesterday have raised concerns over the safety of journalists and their families, with allegations that the attackers invoked the name of a sitting MLA while issuing threats.
According to the account provided in connection with the incident, a group of people allegedly arrived near Kar’s residence and hurled bricks and stones at the house. At the time of the incident, journalist Urmi Kar was reportedly not present at home. Her son, however, was allegedly inside the residence and witnessed the incident.
According to the son’s alleged account, the attackers could not enter the premises because the main gate was closed, but allegedly continued throwing stones from outside. The incident reportedly created panic among the family members.
More seriously, it is alleged that the attackers also issued a direct threat to Kar through her son. According to the account attributed to the boy, the attackers allegedly told him to inform his mother that their “MLA uncle” was standing at Dewanpasha No. 3 Bridge and that she should go there and apologise.
The alleged attackers reportedly further claimed that the person they were referring to was the current MLA, rather than a former legislator, and allegedly threatened that if Kar continued to “go too far”, her mother would be “blown up”. These allegations, if established, would constitute a serious matter requiring investigation by the law-enforcement authorities.
The identity of the persons involved, the exact circumstances that led to the alleged attack and whether any elected representative or political organisation had any connection with the incident remain matters for investigation.
The incident has nevertheless raised broader questions about the safety of journalists working in politically sensitive environments. Journalists routinely face criticism over their reporting, but disputes over news coverage or criticism of public representatives are expected to be addressed through lawful and democratic means rather than intimidation or violence.
