Tripura Congress leader backs Greater Tipraland demand

Senior Congress MLA and CLP leader Birajit Sinha on Tuesday backed Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma’s demand for a “Greater Tipraland” and urged Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha to accept it.

Addressing an election rally at Chinibagan Bazar, Sinha alleged that successive governments had failed to hold the Village Committee elections on time. He said the polls were being conducted after Debbarma’s intervention and subsequent directions from the Supreme Court.

Sinha also criticised the BJP and CPI(M) over their handling of tribal issues and claimed Congress had played a role in the development of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council.

Backing Debbarma’s demand, Sinha referred to areas that were under the Tripura royal administration before Partition and said accepting the demand would resolve the issue. He also referred to alleged statements by some leaders in Bangladesh concerning the Northeast.

The remarks came ahead of the September 28 Village Committee elections to 587 committees with 4,597 seats.

Sinha and Unakoti district Congress president Mohammad Badruzzaman also alleged that party offices and campaign materials were being vandalised and workers threatened in different ADC areas. They alleged voters were being warned of eviction if they did not support BJP candidates.

The Congress leaders said their workers would respond if any untoward incident occurred during the polls.
