CM says Haora riverfront marks milestone in city infra push

Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Tuesday said the newly developed Haora Riverfront marked another milestone in the efforts to transform Agartala into a cleaner, greener and more liveable city.

Dr Saha inaugurated the Haora Riverfront Development Project near Battala and said the riverbank, once used for dumping waste, had been converted into a public space combining nature, recreation, fitness and civic amenities.

The nearly 1,700-metre stretch from Steel Bridge to Dashamighat has been developed at a cost of around Rs 96 crore, with a five-year Annual Maintenance Contract, according to project details.

The project includes walking and cycling paths, viewing decks, an elevated walkway, open gym, yoga space, zipline, children's playground, bird aviary, nature trail, food plaza and an art and craft village.

Dr Saha said riverbank conservation was a key component of the project, with gabion walls, micro-piles, geotextiles and toe walls used for protection and stability. The project also seeks to address erosion and waterlogging, he said.

CCTV surveillance has been installed across the riverfront and will be monitored through the City Command and Control Centre. The facility will remain open to the public from morning until 9 pm daily.

The Chief Minister said the Haora River had been closely associated with Agartala's history, culture and civic life and expressed hope that the riverfront would promote sports, health, recreation and social interaction.

He appealed to residents to keep the facility clean and reduce plastic use.

Dr Saha also recalled that Agartala was among the 100 cities selected under the Smart City Mission in 2015 and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for including the city in the programme.

Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder said the project was aimed at both river conservation and creating a new public space. He said 37 families living along the riverbank at Radhanagar had been rehabilitated with provisions for permanent houses, relocation expenses and livelihood support.

A documentary on the project was screened during the programme. Dr Saha also visited a blood donation camp organised by workers associated with the project.
