‘Mayer Gaman’ (farewell to Mother Goddess) or Dashami carnival of ‘Durga Puja’ to come off on October 23

The much-awaited ‘Mayer Gaman’ (farewell to the Mother Goddess) on the occasion of ‘Vijaya Dashami’ , immersion of idols of Debi Durga and her retinue of lesse deities will officially come off on October 23. According to the almanac the ‘Saptami’ or first day of the ‘Durga Puja’ will be ceremonially held on October 17 while the ‘Dashami’ or immersion ceremony will come off ritually , as prescribed by the almanac, on October 21. The official carnival or collective immersion of ‘Durga Mata’ and her retinue will be organized on October 23.
A high level meeting to discuss ways and means of peacefully organizing the ‘Mayer Gaman’ ceremony was held in the state secretary yesterday in presence of the chief minister Dr Manik Saha who presided. The meeting was also attended by the AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder, West Tripura acting Zilla Sabhadhipati Bishwajit Shil, AMC corporators , ICA secretary Kiran Gittye, Revenue secretary Milind Ramteke and IGP (law and order) Manchak Ippar among others. The representatives of various clubs of Agartala also attended the meeting .
The discussion in the meeting centred on peacefully conducting the carnival or ‘Mayer Gaman’ programme. It was decided that various clubs will congregate in fron to the MTV girls HS school , as in previous years, with images of deities on trucks well in time for the authority to give the green signal for the journey towards the Dashami Ghat area. Sources said that representatives of various who attended the meeting urged upon the authority to ensure banning of DJ sound system during the immersion ceremony as it causes unbearable noise pollution. The official authority agreed to this and the chief minister himself instructed the concerned departments to complete the task of true pruning and shifting of hanging of electrical wires well ahead of the ‘Durga Puja’ festival. Besides, Dr Saha also directed the police authority to strengthen security measures as well as to ensure laying out a separate space on main road for smooth movement of patient carrying ambulances during the crowded puja days. He also asked the tourism officials present in the meeting to explore the possibility of providing tourism facilities during the ‘Puja’ days when people will have holidays .
The AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder who also addressed the meeting urged upon all present including representatives of clubs to extend full co-operation so that the carnival or the ‘Mayer Gaman’ ceremony comes off peacefully. He added that a single window system has been introduced for granting permission for holding community ‘Durga Puja’ in different parts of Agartala town.
