Jitendra Chowdhury Alleges ‘New Culture’ of Attacks in Tripura, Says People Being Assaulted Even in Front of Police

Leader of the Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chowdhury, has alleged that a strange culture of political and social violence has emerged in the state, with opposition political workers as well as ordinary citizens allegedly being attacked even in the presence of police personnel.

Reacting to the reported incident surrounding the submission of nomination papers for a cooperative society election in Udaipur Khilpara, Chowdhury said such a situation was not part of Tripura’s political culture in the past.

He said, “A strange culture has been introduced in Tripura, where not only people belonging to opposition political parties but even ordinary citizens are being attacked in front of the police. Such a culture did not exist earlier.”

The statement came after an alleged clash in the Khilpara area of Udaipur in connection with the nomination process for a cooperative society election. According to the news report, three candidates were allegedly attacked while they were on their way to submit nomination papers.

The report said Monday was the scheduled day for the submission of nominations for the election to the managing committee of the cooperative society. Tension reportedly developed around the society office during the nomination process.

According to the report, the candidates approached the police seeking protection amid the tense situation. However, they were allegedly attacked despite the presence of police personnel.

The incident has triggered fresh concerns over security during election-related processes and the alleged use of violence to intimidate candidates and supporters.

Chowdhury's remarks also come against the backdrop of continuing political tensions in different parts of Tripura. The Opposition has repeatedly raised allegations of attacks on opposition workers and supporters, while ruling-party leaders have generally rejected allegations of systematic political violence and maintained that law and order is being handled according to established procedures.

The latest incident has also raised questions about the role of police personnel in maintaining security during nomination processes. The presence of police at a sensitive election venue is intended to prevent clashes, protect candidates and ensure that eligible participants can exercise their democratic rights without intimidation.

However, allegations that candidates were attacked despite police presence have prompted demands for a proper investigation into the incident and identification of those responsible.
