Mayer Gomon carnival to be held on October 23

The state government has scheduled this year’s Mayer Gomon programme for October 23, with the area in front of Maharani Tulsibati Higher Secondary Girls’ School selected as the central venue.

The decision was taken at a meeting convened to review preparations for Sharad Samman and Mayer Gomon. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha chaired the meeting at Muktadhara Auditorium on Monday. The Information and Cultural Affairs Department organised the meeting.

AMC Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, West Tripura Zilla Parishad acting Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, AMC corporators, Information and Cultural Affairs Secretary Kiran Gitte, Revenue Secretary Milind Ramteke and IGP (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper attended the meeting along with officials and representatives of puja committees.

Representatives of several puja clubs raised concerns over the use of DJ systems during Durga Puja and idol immersion and called for restrictions on their use.

Saha reviewed arrangements for the October 23 programme and instructed the concerned departments to complete tree pruning along roads and relocate electrical wires without delay. He also asked the police to ensure that ambulances could move without obstruction during the Puja period.

The Chief Minister called for adequate security arrangements during the festive period and suggested wider publicity for Mayer Gomon. He also proposed inviting foreign guests to the programme and examining the feasibility of tourism packages covering Durga Puja and Mayer Gomon.

Saha asked all departments concerned to coordinate their preparations for the festival and the cultural programme.

Majumder said the government wanted the festivities to be conducted with the cooperation of all stakeholders. He said adequate security and maintenance of law and order were necessary for people to participate in the celebrations.

According to Majumder, the number of visitors to Mayer Gomon has increased over the years. He appealed to major puja committees to take part in the programme.

Majumder said a single-window mechanism had been introduced for puja permissions and registration fees had been waived. He said 697 pujas were organised in Agartala last year.

Gitte said Mayer Gomon had been organised in Agartala since 2022 and was increasingly reflecting the cultural heritage of Tripura. He called for efforts to make the programme more attractive to tourists.

Ramteke stressed arrangements for safe puja pandals, lighting, deployment of volunteers and disposal of additional waste generated during the festive period.

Ipper asked puja organisers not to resort to forced collection of donations or violate traffic regulations.

Information and Cultural Affairs Director Bimbisar Bhattacharya also reviewed the preparations for Sharad Samman and Mayer Gomon. A documentary on Mayer Gomon was screened during the meeting.
