In a new twist to the simmering tension and ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh as many as 23 listed Islamic militants have been arrested by police from the ‘Zame Maszid’ in Tejgaon area , a commercial hub in the heart of Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. Acting on a tip-off a large contingent of Bangladesh police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) swooped down on the mosque shortly after the Friday congregational prayer was over and picked up the 23 listed militants. They were taken into custody but the police authority did not disclose the individual identity of the nabbed militants and confined their response to queries from the media to a cryptic statement : ‘they will be put through intensive interrogation and then we will disclose all the relevant facts about the militants’.

Sources from Bangladesh said that most of the militants nabbed yesterday had criminal backgrounds and they had been planning a big operation. “It is generally believed that these militants might have plans to infiltrate Indian territory through the border with West Bengal state and fan out in other parts of India” said sources . They added that the BNP government is also perceiving a threat to its existence and continuance in power from Islamic militants enjoying indirect patronage from the major opposition the Jamat-e-Islami. Harder countrywide crackdown on Islamic militants , many of whom had fled captivity in jails across the country during the chaos that had followed the forced ouster from power of the Awami League government headed by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
