The unholy nexus between police and drug dealers and smugglers has been putting paid to the attempt of the state government to curb the proliferating drug menace in the state. A drastic example of this unholy nexus has recently come to the fore from the activities of the police personnel posted in the Madhupur police station under Bishalgarh subdivision. According to sources from Madhupur , the people of Debipur area under the police station had informed the Madhupur police about the existence of and attempt to smuggle out ‘Yaba’ tablets and other drugs worth at least Rs 3 crores to Bangladesh by a notorious but powerful drug dealer of the area Tapan Debnath alias ‘Taipya’.
After receiving the information the sub-inspector of the police station Shubhrajit Deb proceeded to seize the drugs and arrest the peddlers . He could catch a small amount of the drug and arrest five peddlers who were petty conduits of the main dealer Tapan Debnath. While coming by vehicle back to the police station Shubhrajit Deb received a call , allegedly from dealer Tapan Debnath , and was assured of payment of Rs 4 lakh in cash for setting free the nabbed persons and handing back the seized amount of the drug. Acting promptly , Shubhrajit released three peddlers from his vehicle on the road but kept Bijit Banik of Kamalpur and Suman Datta of Sekerkote Pandavpur area and brought the duo to the police station.
Perhaps in order to fleece more money from dealer Tapan Debnath, the Madhupur police station then issued a notice in the name of Tapan Debnath himself and this created a furore as Tapan , a regular donor of bribe to the police station, had always insisted that his name be kept out of all actions. Finally , opening negotiations with agents of the police station Tapan Debnath bought peace by paying Rs 6 lakhs more. However the nabbed duo of Bijit Banik and Suman Datta remained in custody and were booked under the NDPS act. The incident has triggered a furore in the entire Madhupur area as the people have seen through the devious game of police. Sources said that the nabbed duo will also get bail from court soon as the police will dilute the case by sending a weak forwarding to the court.
