Seat-Sharing on Paper, Separate Campaigns on Ground: BJP–Tipra Motha–IPFT Alliance Faces Grassroots Frictions Ahead of ADC Village Council Polls

The BJP–Tipra Motha–IPFT electoral understanding for the upcoming TTAADC Village Committee elections appears to be facing visible challenges at the grassroots, with the three parties formally emerging as electoral partners through seat-sharing arrangements but largely conducting their campaigns separately across several constituencies.

Although the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT have reached an understanding over the distribution of seats, the coordination visible at the organisational level does not appear to be equally reflected in the campaign field. In many areas, party leaders and workers are conducting separate rallies, meetings and door-to-door campaigns rather than appearing together on a common platform.

Joint campaigning involving BJP and Tipra Motha leaders has reportedly been seen only at a limited number of locations. In most constituencies, local-level leaders and workers of the respective parties are concentrating on campaigning for their own candidates and strengthening their individual organisational networks.

The situation is particularly significant because the three parties are technically partners in the Village Committee election arrangement. The seat-sharing formula was expected to facilitate coordinated campaigning and help the alliance present a united political front. However, the ground-level campaign scenario in several areas indicates that the alliance partners are maintaining considerable organisational distance from one another.

The limited participation of Tipra Motha leaders in BJP campaign programmes has also become a talking point among political circles. While there have been instances of leaders from the two parties appearing together during election programmes, such joint appearances appear relatively limited compared with the scale of the overall campaign.

At the same time, allegations of attacks involving IPFT workers have added another dimension to the situation. In some locations, IPFT leaders and workers have alleged that they came under attack allegedly at the hands of Tipra Motha supporters.

Tension reportedly escalated in parts of the Jolaibari area following an incident at Ramrai Bari, where allegations concerning a booth-level incident led to a confrontation between workers associated with Tipra Motha and IPFT. Police intervention subsequently brought the situation under control. The incident has added to concerns over the possibility of further political clashes as campaigning reaches its final stage.

A separate allegation involving IPFT workers has also emerged. According to reports, IPFT General Secretary Swapan Debbarma was allegedly attacked by unidentified persons in connection with the ongoing Village Committee election campaign. A local report published on September 17 also reported that an IPFT worker was injured in an alleged attack linked to the election-related political tension.
