Tripura to follow Centre’s UCC decision, says CM

Tripura will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in accordance with the Centre’s decision, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha said on Monday, while suggesting that tribal areas may be kept outside its scope.

Speaking to reporters after a briefing on the month-long Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, Saha said the state would act once the Centre formally communicates its decision.

On whether customary laws governing marriage, inheritance and other matters in tribal areas would be affected, Saha said he understood that such areas could receive an exemption.

The Chief Minister also dismissed concerns over reports of West Bengal cancelling its Durga Puja carnival, saying Tripura’s post-Puja carnival was a popular public celebration and would continue according to the state’s circumstances.

Saha also warned that legal action would be taken against those allegedly spreading misinformation about the state government’s handling of the treatment of Manasree Chowdhury, who is suffering from SMA Type-I.

On the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, Saha said around 25 programmes would be held across Tripura from September 17 to October 17 to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday. The campaign will include plantation drives, cleanliness programmes and drawing competitions, besides initiatives to create awareness about government welfare schemes.

He said the month-long programme would focus on public participation and taking the benefits of government schemes to more households.
