High-level meeting likely to address Tripura-Mizoram border dispute

A high-level meeting is likely to be convened to take forward efforts to resolve the long-standing border dispute between Tripura and Mizoram, Tripura Home Secretary Abhishek Singh said on Sunday.

Singh made the remarks after holding discussions with a four-member delegation led by the Mizoram Home Secretary in Agartala. The talks followed a decision at a recent North Eastern Council meeting, where Tripura Chief Minister raised the boundary issue.

According to Singh, the dispute is confined to a small stretch around Phuldengsei village in North Tripura. Officials from both sides examined relevant records and documents, including those connected with the Survey of India, during the meeting.

Senior officials, including the North Tripura District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, participated in the discussions.

“We have discussed documents related to the Survey of India. We shall submit the documents and hopefully a higher-level meeting shall be organised,” Singh said.

He said the question of possession of the village council area would ultimately have to be settled on the basis of the Survey of India’s findings.

The latest dialogue marks the first phase of renewed administrative efforts by the two states to resolve the dispute through official-level consultations. No date or venue has yet been announced for the proposed higher-level meeting.
