The case of two-year-old Manushree, a Tripura child battling a complex illness and undergoing medical treatment, has now developed into a wider public controversy involving the state Health Department, social media claims, crowdfunding for her treatment, media organisations and individuals associated with the fundraising campaign.
The controversy intensified on Monday after Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha issued a strong warning that legal action would be taken against those who allegedly misinterpret official government statements and attempt to create confusion among the public regarding Manushree’s treatment.
Responding to a journalist’s question at a press conference, the Chief Minister made it clear that if anyone misinterprets a government statement and attempts to spread misleading information among the people, action would be taken according to law.
The Chief Minister’s remarks came at a time when Manushree’s treatment, the government’s position on her medical care and the crowdfunding campaign launched to support her treatment have become subjects of intense discussion on social media. Over the past several days, competing claims regarding the child’s treatment, the Health Department’s statements, the amount collected through crowdfunding and the utilisation of the funds have been circulating across different social-media platforms.
The controversy has also brought Raja Saha, described by those raising the issue as an expelled BJP youth leader associated with Manushree’s father and the crowdfunding effort, into the spotlight. Questions are being raised over the accuracy of different figures being circulated regarding the amount collected through crowdfunding, as well as the removal of a social-media live broadcast involving Raja Saha.
Social media users have raised several questions after a live video involving Raja Saha was reportedly deleted within approximately 24 hours.
The most immediate question being raised by many people on social media is why the live video was deleted within 24 hours. Critics are asking whether the video was removed because of concerns over its contents and, if so, what prompted that decision.
