Police have detained one person and impounded a motorcycle allegedly used in the broad-daylight snatching of a necklace from an elderly woman in the Bankumari area of Agartala, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place on September 11 when the woman, identified as Gita Das, was out for a morning walk with a neighbour in the Jogendranagar area. She later lodged a complaint with the East Agartala police station, following which an investigation was launched.

Police examined CCTV footage from the area, which showed two helmet-wearing persons riding a motorcycle and allegedly snatching the woman’s necklace.

Acting on information gathered during the investigation, police conducted an operation in the Radhanagar area and detained one person along with the motorcycle suspected to have been used in the incident, police said.

East Agartala police station officer-in-charge Krishnadhan Sarkar said the complaint was received about two hours after the incident and police subsequently began investigating the case.

“The video evidence captured by cameras installed in the area showed a motorcycle with two helmet wearing riders. The two wheeler used in the incident has been impounded,” Sarkar said.

Police are questioning the detained person and investigating whether others were involved in the incident.
