AGMC MBBS Intake Increased to 200 AGMC Gets 50 More MBBS Seats, Tripura’s Medical Education Capacity Rises to 500

In a major boost to medical education in Tripura, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has received approval for 50 additional MBBS seats, increasing its annual intake from 150 to 200 for the 2026–27 academic session.
The National Medical Commission’s approval marks an important milestone for the State’s medical education sector. With 150 MBBS seats each at Tripura Medical College and Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College, Tripura’s total annual MBBS capacity has now reached 500 seats.
The expansion will provide more opportunities for students from Tripura and neighbouring areas to pursue medical education within the State. It is also expected to contribute to the long-term strengthening of Tripura’s healthcare workforce by creating a larger pool of locally trained medical professionals.
The increase at AGMC reflects the continued expansion of medical education infrastructure and capacity in Tripura. As the number of seats grows, the focus will naturally remain on further strengthening faculty, clinical facilities, laboratories and hospital-based training so that students receive comprehensive academic and practical exposure.
The NMC’s revised seat matrix, published on September 9 based on approvals available up to September 1, included the increase in AGMC’s sanctioned intake.
The development comes as India continues to expand its medical education capacity. Tripura’s achievement is particularly significant for a northeastern State, where increasing local access to medical education can help reduce the need for students to travel outside the region for MBBS studies.
The additional 50 seats at AGMC therefore represent more than an increase in numbers. The signal greater educational opportunities for aspiring doctors and the potential for a stronger medical workforce for Tripura in the years ahead.
With AGMC now set to admit 200 MBBS students annually, the latest approval marks another significant step forward in Tripura’s journey towards expanding medical education and strengthening healthcare capacity.
