Questions Over ADC Village Committee Election, IPFT Minister Shukla Charan Noatia Alleges ‘Murder of Democracy’

Political tension has once again emerged surrounding the Village Committee elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas. State Minister and Senior IPFT leader Shukla Charan Noatia has raised serious allegations regarding the transparency of the election process and the democratic environment. He alleged that democracy has effectively been “murdered” in the state over the Village Committee election process.

The minister reportedly made these allegations while speaking to the media on Saturday after an important meeting of the party’s central committee in Agartala Press Club. The Village Committee elections in the ADC areas of the state are scheduled to be held on September 28. Ahead of the polls, political differences and counter-allegations surrounding the nomination and withdrawal phases have taken a new turn.

According to Minister Noatia, discussions had taken place among the three partners of the ruling alliance- BJP, IPFT and Tipra Motha- regarding contesting the Village Committee elections in a coordinated manner. He claimed that there was also a plan to field candidates in certain seats on the basis of mutual understanding. According to him, however, the understanding reached through discussions was not fully implemented in the actual election process.

The situation reportedly became more tense, particularly on the final day of withdrawal of nominations. The minister claimed that candidates of opposition political parties faced various difficulties at different stages, from filing nominations to withdrawing them. He also alleged that some candidates were prevented from entering block offices.

Noatia further alleged that an atmosphere of fear had been created by Tipra Motha and BJP in various parts of the ADC areas surrounding the election and that, in some cases, incidents involving physical pressure on candidates and political workers had also taken place.

The statements of the concerned administration, election authorities and the political parties named in the allegations are also important in this regard.

Against this backdrop, the political equations surrounding the Village Committee elections have also assumed particular significance. On the one hand, discussions on alliance coordination have taken place among BJP, IPFT and Tipra Motha, while on the other hand, the pattern of candidates fielded by the parties in different areas after the nomination process indicates that the electoral equations at the grassroots level of NDA partners are quite complex.

Another important question has emerged from Minister Noatia’s statement, whether the understanding reached between the alliance partners at the political level was actually implemented at the grassroots level in candidate selection and electoral strategy. Since the Village Committee elections are essentially local-level elections, the role of local leadership, candidates and organisational structures, alongside political parties, becomes important in many areas.

Ahead of the September 28 polling, attention will therefore remain focused on ensuring transparency in the election process, the security of candidates and an environment in which voters can exercise their franchise freely.
