A team of experts from the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has appreciated the implementation of foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) initiatives under the NIPUN Tripura Mission during a three-day assessment of schools in the state.

The field study, conducted from September 9 to 11, was part of NCERT’s nationwide study on FLN initiatives. Ten schools, five each in Gomati and West Tripura districts, were covered during the exercise.

The team examined classroom practices and learning environments, besides reviewing initiatives such as NIPUN Corners, activity-based learning, teacher-developed teaching-learning materials (TLMs) and the use of the ‘Jaadui Pitara’ or Magic Box.

NCERT representatives also interacted with students, teachers and parents to assess how the initiatives were being implemented at the school level.

The team particularly noted the use of locally prepared and handmade TLMs by teachers and appreciated activity-based and joyful learning methods aimed at improving student participation and helping teachers assess learning levels.

The delegation said its observations of FLN programmes across different states indicated that the implementation of NIPUN initiatives in Tripura was appreciable. It also highlighted NIPUN Corners, handmade TLMs, Jaadui Pitara and activity-oriented classroom practices among the notable features observed during the visits.

A consultative meeting on “A Study of FLN Initiatives in India & Initiatives by Tripura” was subsequently held at Shiksha Bhawan in Agartala. It was jointly organised by NCERT’s Department of Elementary Education and the Directorate of Elementary Education, Tripura.

The NCERT delegation comprised Prof Dr Padma Yadav, Dr Sandeep Kumar, Dr Pooja Patil, Dr Pranjali Dev and Shweta Sachdeva. Officials from the state education department, DIETs and ATFs, along with BRPs, CRPs, headmasters and teachers, attended the meeting.

The NIPUN Tripura Mission focuses on strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy among children.
