Deputy Speaker Alleges Conspiracy by Influential Elements, Says Encroached Tea Estate Land Was Used for Cannabis Cultivation

Tripura Assembly Deputy Speaker and MLA Ramprasad Paul has strongly rejected allegations linking him or the management of Meghliband Tea Estate with illegal cannabis cultivation, alleging that influential elements are conspiring to malign him.

Paul claimed that the land where cannabis was recently found was among portions of the tea estate allegedly under illegal occupation by some local residents for several years. According to him, the plots concerned were not under the control of the tea garden management.

He further claimed that he had repeatedly informed the police about the alleged illegal occupation as well as cannabis cultivation in the area.

Paul said that the issue had gone beyond merely informing the authorities. He personally remained present during two joint operations with the police in which cannabis plantations were destroyed on allegedly encroached portions of the tea estate.

According to the Deputy Speaker, a section of those occupying the tea garden land is allegedly working in connivance with a local group involved in cultivating cannabis on the occupied plots.

Paul also accused some people based in Agartala, who he alleged were unhappy with his activities, of spreading misinformation against him without properly collecting or verifying facts.

He maintained that the presence of cannabis plantations within the broader area of the tea estate should not be construed as evidence of involvement by the tea garden management. He said the actual ownership and control of the particular plots should be established through a proper investigation.

The Deputy Speaker also thanked the police for conducting the latest anti-narcotics operation and destroying the cannabis plants.

At the same time, Paul urged the West Tripura district police and district administration to take legal action against everyone involved in the illegal cultivation of cannabis, irrespective of their position or association.

He said those actually responsible for cultivating cannabis should be identified and brought under the law, while the alleged encroachment of tea estate land should also be properly investigated.
