SEC admits obstacles created in the way of filing nominations, claims to have spoken to police authority

As anticipated well in advance the opposition parties had to confront obstacles created by the ruling alliance in many places while filing nominations for the Village Committee polls. This has now been officially confirmed, as reported in a local media outlet, by the state election commissioner Pradip Chakraborty. He said that in certain places parties and candidates had to face difficulties and obstacles in the way of filing nominations but nothing happened within the Returning Officers (RO) office.

However the SEC did not say anything about whether the state election commission would do anything about the inability of parties and candidates in filing nominations. He said that altogether 74 companys of police and paramilitary forces would be on duty to ensure peaceful and smooth elections. Out of the 74 companys sanctioned for duty by the union home ministry , 24 companys are already stationed in Tripura while 50 companys will come from outside. The SEC Pradip Chakraborty said that after receiving information about obstacles being created in the way of filing nomination from Salema and Mandai blocks he spoke to the DM (Dhalai) and DM (west) directing them to look into the matter of security. Both the DMs reached the trouble spots and took steps to normalize the situation.

Giving statistical data the SEC Pradip Chakraborty said that for 4597 seats in the 587 Village Committees ,altogether 10,889 candidates filed nominations. Among these ‘Tipra Motha’ filed the highest number of 4361 nominations , followed by the BJP-1971 , CPI (M)-2456, Congress-465 , IPFT-483 and CPI-4. Besides, altogether 1149 independent candidates have also filed papers. The scrutiny of papers was done yesterday and the last date of withdrawal falls on tomorrow , that is September 11. Sources in opposition parties said that pressure is being brought to bear on their candidates to make them withdraw their papers.
