Ruling Alliance Has Become Alienated from People, Jitendra Chowdhury Calls for Stronger Mass Movement

CPI(M) Tripura State Secretary and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chowdhury has alleged that the ruling political alliance in Tripura has become increasingly disconnected from the people and called upon the Left Front and its supporters to intensify democratic mass movements against what he described as anti-people policies of the government.

Chowdhury was speaking at a discussion meeting organised at Ambedkar Bhavan in Agartala by the Tripura Scheduled Caste Coordination Committee to commemorate veteran CPI(M) leader and former minister Anil Sarkar. The programme was attended by CPI(M) leaders, members of the organisation and representatives of different sections of society. The speakers paid tribute to Sarkar and recalled his contribution to the struggles of oppressed, deprived and economically weaker sections of society.

According to Chowdhury, Anil Sarkar had devoted his political life to the cause of social transformation and the rights of marginalised people. He said Sarkar had organised movements among people who had remained socially and economically backward and had played an important role in creating political awareness and confidence among them.

Referring to the present political situation in Tripura, Chowdhury alleged that the ruling BJP-led alliance had adopted policies that were adversely affecting Dalits, backward communities and economically weaker sections. He claimed that the government was pursuing a planned approach that was increasing the difficulties faced by ordinary people. He alleged that the consequences of such policies could be seen in the closure of many government schools and the discontinuation of several welfare and development-oriented programmes, which, he said, were causing hardship to common people.

The Opposition leader also criticised the functioning of the BJP-led government and accused it of failing to adequately address issues relating to education, employment and the welfare of disadvantaged communities. He argued that political slogans and publicity could not substitute for concrete measures to improve people's lives.

Chowdhury further alleged that the government had failed to protect the interests of Dalits, backward classes and other marginalised sections. He called for a stronger democratic movement to resist policies that, according to him, were weakening the rights and interests of ordinary citizens.

Speaking about the legacy of Anil Sarkar, Chowdhury said that the late leader had organised struggles for social change and had brought together people from different disadvantaged sections. He described Sarkar as a leader who worked among the people and helped build confidence among those who had long remained on the margins of society.

The meeting was presided over by Madhab Majumdar. Besides Jitendra Chowdhury, CPI(M) leaders Sudhan Das and other senior leaders addressed the gathering.
