The alleged assault on Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) general secretary Swapan Debbarma has triggered fresh tensions within Tripura’s ruling BJP-led alliance, with senior TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma strongly condemning the incident and questioning the role of the police personnel who were reportedly present at the spot.

Swapan Debbarma was allegedly attacked near the Hezamara Block Office on Tuesday, September 8, during the final day of nomination filing for the long-pending Village Committee elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) region. The incident has assumed political significance as IPFT and TIPRA Motha are both constituents of the BJP-led ruling alliance in the state.

Ranjit Debbarma visited Swapan Debbarma at the Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital in Agartala on Wednesday and expressed serious concern over the incident. According to him, several police personnel were present when the alleged attack took place, yet they failed to prevent the assault. He questioned why the police did not intervene effectively despite being at the location.

Ranjit demanded that those responsible for the alleged assault be immediately identified and arrested. An FIR has already been registered in connection with the incident, and police are investigating the matter. As of Wednesday, no arrest had been reported in connection with the case. Police sources indicated that the circumstances surrounding the incident were being examined and that action would be taken in accordance with law if those involved were identified.

According to the account emerging from the incident, Swapan Debbarma had gone to the area around the Hezamara Block Office while his driver entered the office premises to submit documents related to the election process. An argument reportedly developed after questions were raised over the driver’s entry into the block office. The situation subsequently escalated, leading to the alleged physical assault on the IPFT leader.

Swapan Debbarma reportedly suffered a head injury and was brought to GBP Hospital in Agartala for treatment. His condition was subsequently described as stable.
