Major Relief for Domestic PNG Consumers as TNGCL Slashes Minimum Monthly Charge from 10 SCM to 2 SCM

Domestic piped natural gas (PNG) consumers across Tripura are set to receive significant financial relief following a major revision in the minimum monthly charges announced by the Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL). The revised system, effective from September 2026, reduces the minimum monthly consumption requirement for domestic PNG consumers from 10 Standard Cubic Metres (SCM) to just 2 SCM.

The decision is expected to particularly benefit households with very low PNG consumption, as consumers will no longer be required to pay minimum charges based on the earlier 10 SCM monthly threshold. By bringing down the minimum consumption level by 80 per cent, TNGCL has sought to make piped natural gas more affordable and convenient for households across the state.

According to the information released by TNGCL, the price of domestic PNG is Rs.45.88 per SCM, including applicable taxes. Under the earlier minimum-charge structure, consumers were required to account for a minimum consumption of 10 SCM per month, equivalent to 20 SCM over a two-month billing period. At the stated rate, this amounted to Rs.917.60 for 20 SCM.

Under the revised system, the minimum consumption has been reduced to 2 SCM per month, or 4 SCM over two months. At Rs.45.88 per SCM, the corresponding minimum amount for four SCM works out to Rs.183.52. This represents a substantial reduction in the minimum consumption-linked financial burden for households that use only a small quantity of PNG.

The revision is particularly significant for consumers who have a PNG connection but maintain low gas consumption. Such households may include properties that remain unoccupied for periods, families that use alternative cooking arrangements occasionally, or consumers whose overall gas requirement is limited. The lower minimum threshold means these consumers will be able to retain access to PNG without facing the earlier minimum consumption burden.

TNGCL has described the move as a step towards making PNG more affordable and accessible for every household. The company has also highlighted its broader commitment to providing affordable, cleaner and greener energy to domestic consumers.

Piped natural gas offers households the convenience of receiving gas directly through a pipeline, reducing the need for conventional cylinder handling and storage. With the reduction in the minimum monthly charge, TNGCL's latest decision is expected to further improve the affordability and convenience of PNG for low-consumption domestic users.

The revised minimum charge structure will come into effect from September 2026 and will apply to domestic PNG consumers covered under the TNGCL system.
