Baijalbari Police Clarifies Eskuf Syrup Seizure: No Evidence Yet of Larger Consignment or Wider Smuggling Network

Baijalbari Police under Khowai District have issued a clarification regarding a news report published by TripuraInfo.com on September 6 under the headline, “142 Bottles of Eskuf Syrup Seized from CNG Fuel Tank in Khowai, Allegations Surface Over a Much Larger Consignment Going Missing.” The police said an enquiry was conducted into the facts and allegations referred to in the report and clarified that several claims mentioned in the report have not been substantiated by verified evidence so far.
According to the police, Baijalbari Police Station received specific information at around 1:05 PM on September 6 regarding the movement of a vehicle suspected of carrying contraband towards Agartala. Acting on the information, a police team from Baijalbari Police Station proceeded to Belfang Naka and activated a mobile check post.
At approximately 1:55 PM, the suspected vehicle was intercepted and searched in the presence of an Executive Magistrate and independent witnesses. During the search, police recovered 142 bottles of Eskuf Cough Syrup containing Codeine Phosphate and Triprolidine Hydrochloride from a concealed compartment inside the vehicle’s fuel tank.
The recovered substance and the vehicle were seized, while the driver was arrested, police said. In connection with the seizure, Baijalbari Police Station Case No. 19/2026, dated September 6, 2026, has been registered under Sections 21(c), 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act. The investigation remains underway.
During the preliminary enquiry, police found that the accused had travelled from Dharmanagar towards Agartala through the Ambassa–Kamalpur route. However, authorities said that no evidence has emerged so far linking the seized 142 bottles to any larger consignment or another vehicle carrying contraband.
Police also clarified that allegations concerning the movement of a larger consignment towards the Indo-Bangladesh border, its alleged smuggling across the international border, or its purported links with drug networks operating in Teliamura, Bonkar or other areas have not been substantiated by any verified evidence during the enquiry conducted so far.
The police further stated that there is currently no evidence to establish that they had received specific actionable information regarding another vehicle carrying a larger consignment.
According to the clarification, the seizure of the 142 bottles was the result of prompt action by Baijalbari Police Station based on specific information concerning the vehicle that was ultimately intercepted.
Police said the investigation is continuing and several aspects of the case are being examined, including the source of procurement, intended recipients, possible associates and any wider network that may be involved.
Authorities have stated that appropriate legal action will be taken against all persons found to be involved, based on evidence that emerges during the course of the investigation.
The police have also appealed to the public and media to refrain from drawing conclusions based on unverified allegations and instead rely on facts established through the lawful investigation.
The clarification comes in response to the earlier report and is intended to place the factual position established during the preliminary enquiry in the public domain.
