TSECL Employees May Have to Submit Electricity Bill Copies to Avail Financial Benefits, Rule Could Eventually Extend to General Consumers

A new requirement reportedly being introduced for engineers and employees of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) has triggered discussion within the power utility, with concerns that the measure could eventually be extended beyond employees to ordinary electricity consumers and other categories as part of an effort to increase bill collection.

According to employees, copies of electricity bills are being sought from engineers and other TSECL employees while processing or approving various financial and service-related benefits, including MACP, ACP, stepping-up and LTC.

The development has raised questions over whether submission of an electricity bill should be made a condition for receiving financial benefits that are otherwise connected with an employee’s service.

Could the practice be extended to the general public?

While the reported requirement currently concerns employees, a section of the workforce has expressed apprehension that a similar mechanism could gradually be introduced in other areas, including among general electricity consumers, with the broader objective of ensuring regular payment of electricity dues.

If such a policy is eventually expanded, consumers may potentially be required to demonstrate that their electricity bills are up to date while accessing certain services or benefits.
