Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers marked Teachers’ Day with a special cultural evening at Gyan Manch, Kolkata, on September 5, bringing together education, literature, cinema and theatre in an event organised in association with House 54 and the Department of Performing Arts, Presidency University.
The programme, presented as a celebration of the people and ideas that enrich society, began with ‘Shikkhok Pronam’, a special tribute to two distinguished teachers and creative personalities—renowned linguist Pabitra Sarkar and national award-winning filmmaker Pradipta Bhattacharya.
Rupak Saha, Director of Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers, and Dhiman Mitra, Director of House 54, felicitated the two eminent personalities on the occasion dedicated to teachers. The honour was warmly received by the audience, which gave both role models a standing ovation.
Expressing his gratitude, Pabitra Sarkar said, “As a teacher who studies words, your kindness has left me speechless. Thank you all.”
Pradipta Bhattacharya, known for his preference for working behind the camera, also thanked the organisers for the recognition. “You all know I prefer being behind the camera rather than in the spotlight. Special thanks to Shyam Sundar Co. Jewellers for this recognition,” he said.
‘Taray Taray’ Takes Centre Stage
The evening subsequently moved from the tribute to a much-awaited theatrical presentation of ‘Taray Taray’ (Amid the Stars), marking the return of the popular production.
Inspired by Srijato’s novel ‘Tarabhora Akasher Niche’, the play draws parallels with the life and times of legendary Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, with his artistic world and paintings—including the iconic The Starry Night—woven into the narrative.
The production was directed by acclaimed theatre personality Kaushik Sen, who also featured in the cast alongside Reshmi Sen, Riddhi Sen, Surangana Bandyopadhyay and Rajarshi Nag.
The performance received an enthusiastic response from the audience. The auditorium was packed to capacity, and the play concluded amid thunderous applause, underlining the anticipation surrounding its return.
The event came to a memorable close with Kaushik Sen taking a bow alongside the two honoured teachers, Pabitra Sarkar and Pradipta Bhattacharya, and Rupak Saha.
Celebrating the ‘Gold’ in Life
Speaking about the philosophy behind the initiative, Rupak Saha said that Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers has consistently sought to extend its pursuit of excellence beyond the four walls of its jewellery showrooms by celebrating the people, values and creative achievements that represent the true “gold” of society.
“We, at Shyam Sundar Co Jewellers, have always extended our pursuit of excellence beyond the four walls of the jewellery showrooms by celebrating all that is really ‘gold’ in our lives and times,” Saha said.
He added that the company has always placed teachers in a special position because of their lasting influence on individuals and society.
“And, having always celebrated teachers for playing a leading role in our lives, we feel specially privileged to felicitate two teachers who are seen as role models,” Saha said.
Commenting on the theatrical presentation, he added, “We feel equally privileged to present ‘Taray Taray’ because it is absolutely 24-Karat in content and presentation.”
