Surrendered militants call off strike after talks with Tripura administration

Seven organisations of surrendered militants on Saturday withdrew their 72-hour strike on the second day following discussions with West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar over their 11-point charter of demands.

The decision followed an agreement on most of the issues raised by the organisations, Dr Kumar said.

Speaking to mediapersons after the strike was withdrawn, he said the administration had discussed the demands with representatives of the returnees and accepted most of them within the existing rules.

“We have assured them that all their genuine demands shall be fulfilled in a time-bound manner,” Dr Kumar said, adding that the administration had also discussed certain provisions of the agreement.

Following the consensus reached on the majority of the issues, leaders of the returnee organisations decided to withdraw the agitation, he said.

Dr Kumar also thanked Prasenjit Debbarma, who had been leading the protest.

The strike withdrawal came shortly after Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha returned from New Delhi following a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Dr Saha said after his arrival that instructions had been issued to the concerned officials to take steps to resolve the issue.
