Dhalai river erosion and change of course , Ambassa Kamalpur road and more than two hundred fifty families in danger

The change of course of rivers or erosion of banks owing to this is nothing new but the rapid erosion of banks along the Dhalai river in Kamalpur and its change of course have become a potential source of serious danger for more than 250 families living by the river side in Salema area . These families living on both sides of the river banks now pass days in great fear that their habitats may be swallowed by the Dhalai river anytime and the severity of the monsoon rain this year has further deepened their fear .

Sources from Kamalpur said that the Dhalai river flows by the eastern side of the Ambassa-Kamalpur road but now parts of the crucial connecting road is in danger of being swallowed up by the river. The river started changing its course last year in a major way though this had been going on for a few years past . At one stage the Dhalai river used to flow at least two hundred feet to the east of Salema Rakhaltali area but now through rapid erosion and change of course the river has come very close to human habitations on both the banks. It was only last year that the river had changed course near the TSECL office in Salema and came closer to the Ambassa-Kamalpur road.

Dipak Ranjan Debnath , a resident of Rakhaltali area near Salema said that the way the river has been rapidly changing course and erosion of banks has been taking place at least two hundred fifty families living on both sides of the river near Salema will lose their homes and hearths. He demanded urgent action on the part of the state government to stem the land erosion by the river by putting boulders along the banks , otherwise parts of the Ambassa-Kamalpur road will also disappear.
