Tension Grips Kailashahar’s Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya as Tipra Motha –ABVP Face-Off Escalates, Principal Locked Inside Office

Tension gripped Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya in Kailashahar following a confrontation between the Tipra Motha-backed Tipra Indigenous Students Federation (TISF) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) over the submission of a memorandum to the college authorities. The situation reportedly escalated to the point where the college principal was locked inside his office for several hours, while a heavy security presence was deployed to prevent further violence.

According to reports, a TISF delegation arrived at the college to submit a memorandum to Principal Dr Ajit Barman. TISF claimed that it had obtained prior permission from both the college authorities and the police administration for the programme. The organisation said the memorandum was related to alleged grievances and discrimination faced by indigenous students at the college. TISF is the student organisation of the TIPRA Motha Party and officially describes itself as a platform raising concerns and demands of indigenous students.

However, when the TISF delegation reached the college gate, ABVP supporters allegedly prevented them from entering the campus. According to the allegations, the main gate was closed and slogans opposing Tipra Motha were raised. Police, Tripura State Rifles personnel and central security forces were subsequently deployed around the college gate as the situation became tense. After remaining outside for around one-and-a-half hours, the TISF delegation was reportedly escorted through a security cordon into the principal’s office, where the memorandum was submitted, before being escorted out of the campus.

The situation reportedly took another turn after the TISF delegation left. ABVP supporters entered the principal’s office and staged a protest, subsequently locking Principal Dr Ajit Barman inside the room. ABVP leaders alleged that people associated with NSUI and SFI had entered the college posing as Tipra Motha supporters and had allegedly behaved inappropriately with female ABVP students and pushed students during the confrontation. They held the principal responsible for allowing the situation to develop and demanded action against those involved.

The unrest also reportedly resulted in damage to college property. Reports said curtain stands in the principal’s office and an adjacent office room were damaged, curtains were torn and the college’s electricity supply was temporarily disrupted.
