Agartala Press Club condemn snatching and burning of Daily Desher Katha packets by miscreants aligned with the ruling party, seek CM’s intervention

The Agartala Press Club, the apex body of media in Tripura, has strongly condemned the snatching and burning of bundles of ‘Daily Desher Katha’ newspaper, party organ of the opposition CPI (M) , by miscreants believed to be aligned with the ruling BJP. In a statement issued on the matter the secretary of Agartala Press Club Roma Kanta Dey said that the bundles of ‘Daily Desher Katha’ had been snatched from six hawkers on Monday morning and burnt down besides threatening the hawkers with dire consequences in case they distributed the newspaper again. Describing the snatching and burning of the ‘Daily Desher Katha’ newspaper bundles as a ‘brazen assault on media’ and the constitutional right of freedom of expression the press club secretary Roma Kanta Dey said that such things should not happen again. He also sought the intervention of the chief minister Dr Manik Saha in the matter to ensure punishment for the miscreants.

Meanwhile the editor of ‘Daily Desher Katha’ and verteran journalist Samir Paul has filed a complaint on the issue of snatching and burning of ‘Daily Desher Katha’ packets by miscreants on last Monday or August 31 morning , demanding their immediate arrest. Sources from ‘Daily Desher Katha’ said that on Monday morning packets of the newspaper had been snatched and burnt down by miscreants owing allegiance with the ruling BJP from six hawkers in Supari Bagan area of Krishna Nagar. However, yesterday a large number of CPI (M) workers and leaders including district secretariat member Jhalak Mookherjee , Krishna Nagar local committee secretary Nani Gopal Dhar, TYF president Kaushik Roy Debbarma held a meeting in Supari Bagan area and themselves distributed copies of ‘Daily Desher Katha’ among subscribers and common people alongside hawkers. The local people also lent their support to the distribution of ‘Daily Desher Katha’.
