Unlawful adoption bid foiled, newborn rescued in Santirbazar

An alleged attempt to hand over a newborn for adoption unlawfully was foiled following coordinated efforts by child protection authorities, the local administration and police in Laxmicherra village under Santirbazar subdivision.

The newborn was rescued on September 1, two days after it was allegedly handed over to another couple, and was subsequently produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

According to sources familiar with the sequence of events, the child was born to Harendra Tripura and Manimala Tripura, residents of Laxmicherra village, on August 25. The baby was allegedly handed over to another couple on August 31 in exchange for some consideration.

While allegations of a monetary transaction have emerged, there was no official confirmation on whether the biological parents had received any money from the couple who allegedly took custody of the newborn.

A preliminary raid was carried out in the presence of an executive magistrate, but the child could not be rescued as the operation took place late at night. The following day, the parents were summoned to Baikhora police station, where the newborn was recovered and subsequently taken into the custody of child protection authorities.

Sources also alleged that hospital records had been manipulated to facilitate the transfer of the baby, including an alleged change in the mother's name. However, the authenticity of these claims has not been independently established.

The child's future custody will now be determined by the CWC.

An official associated with the child protection authorities said the newborn had been rescued two days after the alleged incident and was currently in their custody. The matter would be placed before the CWC, which would decide whether the child should be returned to the biological parents or placed in a protective home.
