CPI (M) to align with CPI (ML) for upcoming VC election in ADC , Congress still not in consideration

The opposition CPI (M) is all set to forge an alliance with the radical CPI (ML) for the upcoming election to 587 Village Committees under the ADC. A clear indication in this regard was given today by the CPI (M) state secretary and politburo member Jiten Chowdhury. Speaking to media on the issue Jiten said that the CPI (ML) despite its limited strength and difference in ideological position approached the CPI (M) for an electoral understanding and seat adjustment for the ADC polls and the state CPI (M) leadership agreed to their proposal. Both the parties will fight the polls together now.

However, the CPI (M) state secretary was non-committal on any alliance with the Congress with which it had an alliance and seat adjustment in the last assembly polls . But the relation between the two parties worsened after the by-election to the Dharma Nagar assembly constituency in which the parties fought separately after the CPI (M) had unilaterally declared its candidature for the polls without any consultation with Congress. “There has been no discussion with the Congress over the VC polls in ADC areas for seat adjustment or an alliance in general; I would also like to mention that in the hilly areas Congress has hardly any strength or political base ; hence we do not feel there is any necessity for electoral alliance with Congress” said Jiten.

Sources in CPI (M) said that the party is taking the upcoming elections to the Village Committees (VC) seriously as it can become a launching pad for the party to rebuild its base and regain its strength. Since the ADC controlled by the ‘Tipra Motha’ has failed on all fronts, the CPI (M) leaders feel that the Village Committee polls will give them an opportunity to test their existing strength as well as to gain ground through participation in the polls. Apart from this, the state Congress leadership is also trying to contest the polls on its own strength. During the past three years of his tenure as PCC president , Asish Kumar Saha has relentlessly worked to build up a base for the Congress in ADC areas and the party is now preparing to take part in the election on its own.
