Police Seized Copy of the Former DGP Anurag Dhankar’s Suicide Note, Police Examining WhatsApp Copy and Handwritten Note

The investigation into the mysterious death of former Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar has taken a significant new turn with investigators examining two alleged versions of a suicide note, one in digital form reportedly sent to his wife through WhatsApp and another handwritten same document allegedly recovered from the pocket of the clothes he was wearing at the time of his death.

A senior police officer said on Tuesday morning that the investigating team is examining every aspect of the alleged suicide note, including whether it is genuine, fabricated or potentially generated using artificial intelligence. The officer indicated that the police are treating the document and its digital version as important pieces of evidence and that their authenticity has not yet been established.

According to information emerging from the investigation, the police team on Monday questioned Dhankar’s wife at length after visiting the government accommodation where the former DGP had been residing. During the course of the inquiry, investigators reportedly obtained a digital copy of the alleged suicide note from her mobile phone, which was said to have been received through WhatsApp.

The investigating team also reportedly seized the mobile phone for forensic examination. The device is expected to be examined to establish the exact nature of the communication, including when the alleged message was created or received, whether the document was subsequently altered and what digital traces may be available.

The development assumes particular significance because Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman had earlier claimed that Dhankar had left behind a suicide note before his death. According to Roy Barman, the former DGP had kept a note on his table and had also sent a copy of it to his wife through WhatsApp.

The Congress MLA subsequently made another serious claim regarding the alleged physical copy. He claimed that after Dhankar’s wife returned to Tripura and searched for the original document, a handwritten suicide note was allegedly found in the pocket of the clothes worn by the former DGP.

The latest police action appears to have brought both the digital and physical versions of the alleged document under the scrutiny of investigators. If formally taken into evidence, the handwritten document could be subjected to forensic and handwriting examination to determine whether it was actually written by Dhankar.

At the same time, the WhatsApp copy could provide investigators with a separate digital trail. Police may examine the message's timestamp, available metadata, transmission history and other relevant information to determine when and how the alleged document reached Dhankar’s wife.
