Tripura CM’s ‘Smart Traffic’ Claim Challenged by Opposition Leader, Questions Raised Over Defunct CCTV Cameras

A political dispute has erupted over the state government’s claims regarding the expansion of smart traffic management and surveillance infrastructure in Agartala, with Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury questioning the ground reality of the system and alleging that several CCTV cameras and traffic signals in the capital are either malfunctioning or in need of replacement.

Speaking inside the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Manik Saha highlighted a series of technology-driven measures being introduced to strengthen traffic management and road safety in Agartala. According to the government’s information, the city’s traffic infrastructure includes CCTV surveillance, smart traffic signals, red-light violation detection cameras and automatic number-plate recognition systems. The government has also pointed to the installation of speed radars, variable message display boards and other modern equipment.

The Chief Minister said that technology was increasingly being used not only for surveillance but also for enforcement of traffic laws. Measures include e-challan facilities, online payment of fines, automated monitoring of traffic violations and the use of modern devices such as speed radars, body-worn cameras and other digital equipment. The government has also indicated that surveillance of vulnerable locations and traffic corridors is being strengthened.

However, Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury strongly disputed the Chief Minister’s claims after the Assembly proceedings. He questioned whether the technology being cited by the government is actually functioning effectively on the ground.

Chaudhury alleged that when police require CCTV footage while investigating thefts, accidents or other incidents, they often find that the relevant cameras are not functioning. According to him, the mere installation of CCTV cameras cannot ensure effective surveillance unless the equipment remains operational and footage is properly available when required.

He further claimed that a large number of traffic signals and CCTV cameras across Agartala have either become outdated or require replacement. The Opposition Leader argued that the government’s claims about a technologically advanced traffic management system should therefore be assessed against the actual condition of the infrastructure available on the streets.
