Tripura Government Plans 3.985-Km Flyover Network to Ease Agartala Traffic, Rs.457 Crore Road Projects Underway: CM

The Tripura government has outlined an ambitious plan to improve the state’s road and urban transport infrastructure, including the construction of a major flyover network in Agartala and large-scale road development and renovation projects across the state.
According to information placed before the Tripura Legislative Assembly, the government is considering a plan to construct a flyover network stretching approximately 3.985 kilometres from firebriged Choumuhani through Ker Chowmuhani, Sankar Choumuhani and Durga Choumuhani towards Katakhal to Radhanagar busstop, with the project envisaged as part of a long-term effort to address traffic congestion and improve connectivity in the capital city.
The government has already initiated preparatory work for the proposed flyover project. A preliminary project report (PPR) has reportedly been prepared, while the Detailed Project Report (DPR), technical assessment, estimated expenditure and other formalities are being taken forward. The project will also require consideration of issues relating to land acquisition and the identification of suitable agencies for execution.
The issue came up in the Assembly through questions raised by MLAs Tafazzal Hossain and Sudip Roy Barman. In response, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha provided information regarding the government's plans for improving road infrastructure and addressing traffic-related problems in Agartala.
The Chief Minister informed the Assembly that the state currently has approximately 204.45 kilometres of double-lane roads under the state road network. Efforts are underway to upgrade additional roads to double-lane standards wherever technically feasible and where the required land and financial resources can be arranged.
The government has also indicated that road widening and upgrading works will be undertaken in phases, depending on the availability of land and funds. The objective is to improve traffic movement, strengthen connectivity and provide better road infrastructure to residents.
In Agartala city alone, approximately 114.275 kilometres of roads require renovation and infrastructure improvement, according to information provided by the government. The authorities have been examining these requirements as part of the broader urban road-development programme.
The government has also received financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Under this assistance, four packages have been taken up, including the construction of a complete stretch of Smart Road, while other components of the urban road-development programme are also being implemented.
The Chief Minister stated that under the ongoing financial year, Rs.33 crore 90 lakh 49 thousand 999 has been earmarked for the construction and development of roads in Agartala under the relevant programme. In addition, through the Asian Development Bank-supported programme, a total estimated expenditure of around Rs.457.35 crore has been earmarked for road-development works. These projects are expected to significantly strengthen the city's road network and improve urban mobility.
Meanwhile, renovation work on approximately 25.06 kilometres of roads in Agartala city has already been completed under the ongoing programme involving road and bridge infrastructure. The government said that repair and renovation work on roads damaged during the monsoon is also continuing.
According to the Chief Minister, the authorities are giving priority to repairing roads that have suffered damage and restoring them to usable condition. Agartala Smart City Limited, along with the concerned agencies, is also undertaking road-repair and renovation works under the relevant projects.
The proposed flyover network, together with the ongoing Smart Road and road-renovation programmes, is being viewed as a major component of the government's efforts to modernise Agartala's transportation infrastructure. If implemented as planned, the projects could help reduce congestion at some of the city's busiest junctions while improving connectivity between important urban corridors.
