Content Creators Threatened for Seeking Accounts of Manushree’s Treatment Fund, Live Video from Inside Police Station Raises Questions

A fresh controversy has erupted over the funds collected for the treatment of two-year-old Manushree, with allegations that several content creators were threatened with legal action and told that they would be seen to after raising questions about the accounts of the money collected in the child’s name.

The controversy intensified after a live video message was reportedly broadcast from inside a police station, in which one suspended BJP’s youth leader Raja Saha allegedly issued strong warnings against some content creators who had been demanding transparency regarding the collection and utilisation of funds for Manushree’s treatment.

The incident has raised serious questions about the circumstances under which the live broadcast was made from inside the east Agartala police station and about the role of the police personnel and the Officer-in-Charge concerned. Raja Saha has reportedly claimed that he came to the police station following an invitation from the OC and that legal action was being initiated against those questioning the fundraising.

The central issue, however, remains the demand for a proper account of the money collected for Manushree’s treatment. The child, who is reportedly suffering from SMA Type 2, is undergoing treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi. Questions have been raised over whether the large-scale fundraising undertaken in her name had the necessary authorisation or approval from the treating institution and whether the entire amount collected has been properly documented and accounted for.

Those demanding transparency argue that asking how much money was collected, how much was spent on treatment, what amount remains and where the remaining funds are being held cannot, by itself, be treated as an offence. If the fundraising was conducted lawfully and the accounts are transparent, they say, the simplest way to end the controversy would be to make the relevant financial records public.

The alleged threat against content creators for demanding such information has therefore triggered another question that is seeking an account of money collected for the treatment of a critically ill child now being treated as an offence?

The role of the police has also come under scrutiny. If the police facilitated or permitted a private individual to conduct a live broadcast from inside the police station while warning people who were demanding financial transparency, questions naturally arise regarding police neutrality and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

At the same time, any allegation of defamation, misinformation, harassment or other unlawful conduct can be dealt with through due legal process. But critics argue that legitimate questions regarding a public fundraising campaign should be answered with documentary evidence rather than threats or intimidation.

The controversy has now moved beyond the question of the fundraising itself and has become a wider debate over financial transparency, accountability, freedom to question and the neutrality of the police.
