State election commission announce ADC Village Committee poll schedule

The state election commission has today announced the detailed poll schedule for the Village Committee elections under the ADC areas . Addressing an interactive session with the media the state election commissioner Pradip Chakraborty said that as per the schedule finalized by the commission, election to the 587 village committees will come off on September 28 from 7-00 AM to 4-00 PM . The date of 3rd October has been set aside for holding repolls , if any while counting of ballots- the election will be held on ballots and not on EVMs- will come off on October 5 from 8-00 AM till end and the entire poll process will be completed on October 8.

Giving other important details of the Village Committee polls the state election commissioner Pradip Chakraborty said that a total electorate of 9,61,987 have been found eligible for voting and listed and out of them 4.82 lakh are men and 4.80 lakhs are women. There are only 6 transgenders among the electorate. The polling will be conducted in altogether 1550 polling stations out of which Dhalai district has the highest number of 289 polling stations and Unakoti district has the lowest number of only 92 polling stations. The village committee polls will be conducted in 52 of the state’s 58 blocks and 251 electoral registration officers (ERO) and 73 sector officers have been appointed for smooth conduct of the election which will be held through ballots and not by EVMs. It has been decided by the state election that electoral photo identity cards or EPICS will be accepted for the purpose of identity though the commission has made provision for other documents to be shown by voters to establish their identities. Pradip Chakraborty added that counting of ballots will be held in block headquarters though other designated places and halls may be notified by the election commission at need.

Regarding the details of the poll schedule Pradip Chakraborty said that the official notification for the polls will be issued on September 1 and the process of filing nomination will also commence from the same date, that is tomorrow. The last day of filing nomination will fall on September 8, followed by scrutiny of nomination on 9th September and withdrawal of papers on 11th September. “We have already held meetings with the security agencies for safe and smooth elections and also with representatives of political parties ; an important meeting with political parties was held on August 27 ; it was fruitful and assurance was given by parties on co-operation; there have also been meetings with district election officers and the returning officers ; there will be adequate security and we anticipate no problem” said Pradip Chakraborty.
