Reaction in police and official circles over statement over scrutiny of deceased DGP Anurag Dhankar’s personal bank account and financial transaction

The high police circles in the state as well as those close to late DGP Anurag Dhankar expressed shock and dismay over a statement in the state assembly asserting that as part of inquiry into his supposed suicide his personal bank account and financial transactions will also be scrutinized . The statement in this regard was made by the chief minister Dr Manik Saha in reply to a motion moved by the opposition parties who expressed their misgivings over the background and manner in which ex-DGP Anurag Dhankar had committed suicide in his toilet attached to his official chamber in the state secretariat.

“ The ex-DGP Anurag Dhankar was a man of sterling and unimpeachable honesty as is known to all his colleagues,associates and men close to him ; it is really sad that his personal bank account and financial transactions will be put to scrutiny now ; he had performed many important responsibilities including investigation into anti-Sikh riots and similar other cases entrusted by government of India with impeccable honesty ; we do not know in what context the question of his bank account and financial transaction arose but this is shocking” said a senior police officer . He said that reference to his could have been ruled out. Similar views were expressed by other responsible people who knew Anurag Dhankar from close quarters.

However official sources here said that at a personal level many people know that Dhankar was an honest officer of high integrity. “But when an inquiry is done in an unfortunate incident like suicide is done all angles have to be examined as a matter of routine ; so the statement was made but this does not mean that an aspersion is being cast on Dhankar’s personal conduct ; we know he was a man of sterling honesty but as part of the inquiry it is unavoidable to scrutinize his bank account and financial transactions” said sources.
