Gaping vacancies in posts of teachers in state’s government run colleges, effort on to fill up vacancies

A dismal picture of teacher shortage at college level has emerged from data given in the state assembly today. This came out in the form of a written reply tabled in the state assembly today by the minister for higher education Kishore Barman to an ‘unstarred’ question put by veteran Congress MLA Sudip Roybarman.

According to the reply given by Kishore Barman, there are altogether 683 sanctioned posts of teachers for various subjects in the state’s 32 government run colleges covering all subjects from science to commerce , languages and even music. But out of this as many as 243 are currently vacant across all subjects . Interestingly , there are two sanctioned posts of teachers for music and both are lying vacant while for ‘Kokborok’ out of 22 sanctioned posts 4 are vacant despite easy availability of teachers.

Detailing what the state government is doing to fill up the vacancies, the minister said that the state government had put forward a proposal to the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) for filling up 201 posts of teachers for degree colleges . The TPSC has completed the first phase of interviews and sent a list of 74 teachers for 14 subjects and the interviews for the second phase is still on and after completion the second will also be sent to the government by the public service commission. Kishore Barman said that the higher education department has sent offers of appointment to the candidates selected in the first phase after completing the administrative process.

He added that in order to make up for the shortfall of teachers the higher education department has directed the college authorities to appoint 732 guest lecturers. At present the higher education department is awaiting clearance from the finance department for filling up 200 newly created posts and 42 existing vacant posts . The entire process is likely to be completed within the current financial year, minister Kishore Barman added.
